Tell Me It Ain't So
By mvyb, 13.07.2006, 20:24

I wish I could tell you that the Yankees have signed Barry Zito.
Or Livan Hernandez.
I'd even take Jason Vargas.
....but Sidney Ponson.
An hour ago, the Associated Press reported that the Yankees will sign Ponson to a $150,000 deal for the remainder of the season. Earlier this year, Ponson signed with the Cardinals, but after several bad starts he was sent to the bullpen and eventually released. His record was 4-4 with a 5.24 ERA for St. Louis.
Ponson made his major league debut in 1998 for Baltimore, going 8-9 with a 5.27 ERA ( hasn't really changed since). He played for over five years with the Orioles, and was then traded to San Fransisco for 10 games. He soon returned to Baltimore for another two years. Ponson was convicted of driving while impaired last year, and sentenced to 5 days in jail ( he also spent 11 days after a fight at a beach).
Ponson, now 29, has struggled all through his career. I don't know why Cashman thinks this signing could possibly help New York. Randy Johnson and Carl Pavano are bad enough! But why should Cashman bring another, disappointing, erratic, moody pitcher to the Bronx???? How will he help?

"It's hard to upgrade your pitching, it really is," Cashman said (AP). "Hopefully, this is something that will work out for us. It's low risk and hopefully we'll get some upside out of this."

Well, yeah it's gonna be tough to upgrade the pitching as it is, but how is adding Ponson supposed to help?!?!

Ponson has always been inconsistant. His weight is a major issue, one of the reasons that the Orioles released him in the middle of last year. Ponson also has off the field issues.

Pitching is in high demand this season, I don't think the Yankees have the prospects to pick up a decent pitcher. We see that Gary Majewski and Bill Bray went to Cincinatti in a deal where the Reds had to give up Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez. Great deal Nats!!!
