Matsui to the DL, Yanks Lose Series to O's
By mvyb, 08.04.2007, 18:36

              Orioles 6, Yankees 4
W- Bedard (1-1)
L- Rasner (0-1)
S- Ray (2)
Millar: 2-3, HR (1) 2R, 3RBI
Bako: 1-4, HR (1), 3RBI
Bedard: 7IP, 5H, 3ER, 5K
New York:
Rodriguez: 1-3, HR (4), 2RBI, BB
Damon: 2-2, 3B, R
Exluding the A-Rod grand slam, this was a week that Yankee fans will definitely want to forget. Just take a look at New York's starting pitcher's line from April 2nd to April 8th and you'll shudder.
Pavano: 4.1IP, 6H, 5R, 4ER
Pettitte: 4IP, 6H, 4R, 2ER
Mussina: 4IP, 8H, 6R, 6ER
Igawa: 5IP, 8H, 7R, 7ER
Rasner: 4.1IP, 8H, 5R, 5ER
    21.2IP, 36H, 27R, 24ER
As you can see, Darrell Rasner was not sharp this afternoon. The Yanks had handed him a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, thanks to an RBI sac fly by Abreu and a two-run homer by A-Rod. But that lead was soon squandered as Rasner gave up a juicy two-run homer to Millar and a 3-run shot to Bako.
Erik Bedard, meanwhile, settled in and pitched 7 dominant innings against the formidable Yankee lineup.

The Yanks scored one in the eighth (a Melky Cabrera RBI-ground out after a Damon triple), but Chris Ray composed himself and shut the door in the ninth.
The only consistently positive thing the Yanks had this week was a solid pen. Take a look at these numbers:
Bruney: 2.2P, H, BB, 6K
Henn: 4.2IP, 2H, BB
Myers: 4IP, H, 3BB, 2K
Vizcaino: 3.1IP,2H,BB,R,K
Farnsworth: 2IP,H,K, BB
Rivera:  2IP, H, 4K
22.1IP,12H, 9BB,3ER,14K
(Note: I left Pettitte's one inning of relief work out of this stat box because he is technically not part of the bullpen.)
When your bullpen has to pitch 22+ innings in a week and allows only 3 earned runs, you're in a good place. Our seven-man pen had a gorgeous 1.25 ERA for the entire week! If the Yanks had gotten two or three decent starts out of the rotation, the Yanks would be heading into Week 2, 5-0.
One last bit of news... Hideki Matsui is headed to the DL for 15 days. Kevin Thompson will take his place on the roster.
Oh, well.... You have to put the past behind you... Tomorrow the Yanks take on the Twins in Minnesota. Boof Bonser versus Carl Pavano. Should be interesting...
Goat of the Game:
Darrell Rasner
- 4.1IP, 8H, 5ER, 2BB, 2K
- picked up the loss
