Derek Jeter
Hey! My name is Zachary and this is my site, Yankee Mania, where I explore the games, players, and transactions of the greatest team in baseball. Hated by some but loved by others, the New York Yankees have dominated the world of sports for over a century. This year I follow their noble quest to win yet another World Series Championship. A-Rod Comes Through! (So Let's Temporarily Forget Igawa's Start)
By mvyb, 07.04.2007, 22:47

            Orioles 7, Yankees 10
W- Rivera (1-0)
L- Ray (0-1)
Mora: 2-5, HR (2), 2B, 5RBI, R
Markakis: 2-5, HR (1)
New York:
Rodriguez: 3-4, 2HR (3), 2B, BB, 6 RBI, 4R
Bullpen: 4IP, H, BB, 0R, 5K
At approximately 4:22 PM, I knelt, hands folded and heart pounding, in front of my TV. "Please, A-Rod... Please...."
And then our dear thirdbaseman swung his bat and I was happy.
Man, if you missed today's game.... You are out of luck. But before I get to the ninth, here's a brief summary of the first eight innings.
- The game started off on the wrong foot with Igawa getting pounded hard by the O's. The Japanese-pitcher gave up 7 earned runs in just 5 innings of work... Melvin Mora (2-run HR and 3-run double) was at the heart of this ruthless beating; Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts also chipped in.
- A-Rod hit a two-run homer in the first, and Posada's RBI-single brought the game to 7-3 where it stayed till the eighth.
- Brian Bruney (IP, 3K) Mike Myers (IP, BB), Luis Vizcaino (IP, K), and Mariano Rivera (IP, H, K) were absolutely lights-out against Baltimore for four innings. They're the forgotten heroes of the afternoon...
- Hideki Matsui exited the game with a "strained left hamstring" and was replaced in left by the ever-versatile, Miguel Cairo.
- Jason Giambi came to bat with two on and one out in the eighth and mauled a Baez pitch into the left field seats.
Now in the bottom of the ninth, Doug Mientkiewicz grounded to second and Melky Cabrera (who picked up his first hit of the year in an earlier at-bat) struck out swinging. Robby Cano got on with a single, the Yanks first hit against Chris Ray in the series. The Cap'n had a long and difficult at-bat, but finally coaxed the walk. Bobby Abreu wasn't given the opportunity of being the hero, as he was hit in the leg on the second pitch he saw.
Then Alex strode to the plate.
Ball 1.
Called strike 1.
Swing and a miss, strike 2.
And on a 1-2 pitch, the 2005 MVP hit a walk-off grand slam to dead center. From there on it was nothing but celebration. The trot around the bases, the team leaping on Alex as he touched home plate, Jeter pushing A-Rod out of the dugout to take a curtain call, etc...
(For pictures, see previous post.)
Tomorrow Darrell Rasner makes his first start of the year.... but I'm not gonna worry about that until tomorrow afternoon. Right now it's time to celebrate!
Player of the Game:
Alex Rodriguez
- 3-4, 2 HR, 2B, BB, 6RBI, 4R
- hit a walkoff grand slam
