Game 20: Blue Jays v. Yankees

.
Quick Notes: Phil Hughes makes his long-awaited major league debut tonight as the Yanks try to snap their five-game losing streak. Hughes has quality stuff, but is he ready for the big leagues?
.
Burnett is dominating when he has his best stuff... when he's off, he's very hittable. A-Rod has two homers in eight career at-bats against the Toronto righty. Go Yankees!

Quick Notes: Interesting to see Mientkiewicz in the Yankee lineup instead of Phelps. Josh Phelps has great numbers lifetime against Schilling, but I guess Torre went with defense over offense from the #9 hole. Andy Pettitte is 13-5 (3.08 ERA) career against Boston. He's 5-2 at Fenway. But the Yankee lefty hasn't faced the BoSox since Game 6 of the 2003 ALCS.
.
The Red Sox bring their A lineup to face Pettitte tonight. Manny has ridiculous numbers lifetime against Andy, so we could see some long balls.
.
This game does't mean all that much, in fact, I'd trade a Yankee win via 8 long innings from our bullpen for a Red Sox win via 8 innings from Pettitte.
.
But I do think that if the Yanks jump on Schilling early and get into that weak Boston pen, we'll probably see a nice Bronx victory. Go Yankees! Go A-Rod!

Quick Notes: Kei Igawa will be making his 3rd major league start tonight, and will be facing his toughest opponents yet. Igawa pitched well in his last outing (in Oakland), but has yet to start a game without allowing at least one long home run.
.
Jeremy Sowers won his only career start against the Bombers, pitching seven innings and allowing only two runs on six hits. Jason Giambi took him deep in that game.
.
Might be a rough night, but here's hoping for the best.... Go Yankees!

3B, Marte
P, Westbrook
.
Quick Notes: Chase Wright will make his first major league start tonight, weather permitting. Wright was impressive in spring training, and was called up from AA when Mussina and Pavano hit the DL. Wright is a lefty who relies on a curve and a sinking fastball to get hitters out. The Indians have a terrifying lineup (featuring Travis Hafner, Grady Sizemore, Casey Blake, and Josh Barfield), so Wright will have to be on top of his game in order to survive.
.
Jake Westbrook is 2-2 (in 5 starts) with a 3.69 ERA career against the Yankees. Jason Giambi and Jorge Posada are the only players in tonight's lineup who have taken Westbrook deep. The Cleveland righty is a ground-ball/contact pitcher so prepare for half a dozen double plays.
.
This is gonna be a rough week (with Mussina, Pavano, Wang, Karstens, and Matsui on the DL), but maybe we'll find hidden magic in Chase Wright. Go Yankees!

.
Quick Notes:  Ok, Rasner takes the hill for New York in his second start of the year. Let's hope this performance is nothing like his last one. The A's lineup is probably the weakest in the American League, so even Rasner has a shot at brilliance tonight.
.
Man, the bottom third of the Yankee lineup is really, really weak. Matsui's out, Posada has the day off, and because of his terrible production of late (0-21), Mientkiewicz is sitting on the bench.
.
Joe Blanton has only faced the Yankees twice in his career and is 0-2 with an inflated 13.50 ERA. Jeter and A-Rod have each taken him deep, and Phelps has driven in three runs in two at-bats against the Oakland pitcher.
.
It was raining earlier, but things have brightened up and the forcast is clear.
.
With a win tonight, the Yanks will be back at .500 (which is exactly where they were one year ago). Go Yankees!

.
Boof Bonser has never faced the Yankees, so I have no idea whether New York's sluggers will light him up or bow down before him. In his first start of the season, Bonser went 6 innings, allowing 2 earned runs (one homer), 3 hits, and 3 walks against the Baltimore Orioles.
.
The only player in the Yankee lineup that Bonser has faced is Doug Mientkiewicz (while he was with Kansas City), who is 1-2 with a single and a strikeout against the Minnesota pitcher.
.
Andy Pettitte pitched poorly in his first start, but has said that he feels much better now then he did on Thursday. Pettitte has pitched 16 games against the Twins and has a career record of 7-5 with a 3.71 ERA against the team. But the Yankee lefty has very little history against the current Twins players: Rondell White ( 2-6 with a double), Torii Hunter (.250 BA in 20 at-bats), Michael Cuddyer (1-5), Luis Castillo ( 1-6), and Mike Redmond ( single in only at-bat). Pettitte has never faced Mauer, Morneau, Rabe, Bartlett, or Punto.
.
Let's hope the Yanks play like they did last night. Go Yankees!

The Twins are bringing their A-lineup, featuring 2006 MVP Justin Morneau and 2006 batting champ Joe Mauer. Michael Cuddyer, Torii Hunter, and Jason Kubel are also dangerous hitters to be found in the Minnesota lineup.
.
The only batters in the Twin's lineup that Carl Pavano has faced before are Luis Castillo ( .261BA, 6-23), Mike Redmond ( 0-2), and Nick Punto (0-1).

The Yanks really need Mussina to step up tonight. New York's starters have combined for 8.1IP, 12H, 9R, 5BB over the last two games, so the bullpen has already seen a ton of work.
 .
Mike Mussina has a career record of 9-5 and an ERA of 4.21 against the Baltimore Orioles. Miguel Tejeda ( .419 BA, 4 HR v. Mussina) and Kevin Millar ( .457 BA, 16 hits, 2 HR v. Mussina) are the players Moose needs to be careful with.
 .
.
Adam Loewen is 2-1 with a sick 2.63 career ERA against the Yankees ( 4 starts).
.
Bobby Abreu: 1-4
Jason Giambi: 0-2
Derek Jeter: 3-11
Alex Rodriguez: 0-4

This could be ugly.... but let's hope for the best.

NLCS Game 7: St. Louis Cardinals v. New York Mets
By mvyb, 17:16

Not much going on in the Yankee Empire, so like everyone else, I'm gearing up for tonight's Game 7 of the NLCS.

What a series it has been for the Cards and Mets, both teams have played admirably and with a lot of spirit ( something that you didn't see in the Yankees, Padres, Dodgers, or Twins). A week ago, I would have laughed at you if you had told me the Cardinals would play well enough to challenge the Mets for the National League title.  St. Louis stumbled into the postseason, carrying the worst record of all 8 playoff-bound teams. Somehow, they regrouped, thanks to great pitching ( by Weaver, Suppan, and 'pen) and decent offense ( led by Eckstein, Spiezio, Pujols, and Molina).

And how about those "pitcher-less" Mets? How can they continue to play so well?

If you took away two top starting pitchers from the other playoff teams, they wouldn't survive:

Imagine the A's without Zito or Loaiza, the Tigers without Rogers or Verlander, and the Cardinals without Carpenter or Weaver. The teams would be creamed. But the Mets somehow found a way, and are on the verge of heading to the World Series for the first time in 6 years.

I'm sure you'all know that I am an avid Yankee fan, but part of me roots for the Mets every time they play. When the '06 season started, I wanted the Yanks to win it all, but if they couldn't, the Mets were the team I'd cheer for through October.

The pitching matchup tonight does favor the Cardinals:

Jeff Suppan (1-0, 0.00) v. Oliver Perez ( 1-0, 7.90)

Suppan is 3-1 ( 2.27 ERA) in 6 regular season starts against the Mets. He shut them out over 8 innings in Game 3 at St. Louis. Suppan hasn't pitched as well on the road this year as he has at home, which should serve as a slight advantage for the Mets. The Amazins' are going to have to put together good at-bats, score first, and hold the momentum throughout the game.

Oliver Perez was a late-season pickup for the Mets, and is now making what is probably his most important career start. Last time out ( in Game 4), he pitched well enough to win, even though he allowed 3 long balls over 5.1 innings pitched. Perez has the stuff to pitch brilliantly, he just needs to hit his spots consistently.

Tonight's Starting Lineups:

SS- Eckstein
LF- Wilson
1B- Pujols
RF- Encarnacion
CF- Edmonds
3B- Rolen
C- Molina
2B- Belliard
P- Suppan

SS- Reyes
C- Lo Duca
CF- Beltran
1B- Delgado
3B- Wright
RF- Green
2B- Valentin
LF- Chavez
P- Perez

Do or die for both teams. It doesn't get better then this...

Go Mets!

Game 104: Blue Jays v. Yankees
By mvyb, 16:16

7:05PM

New York Yankees' Starting Lineup:

CF- Damon
SS- Jeter
RF-Abreu
3B- Rodriguez
C- Posada
DH- Williams
1B- Wilson
LF- Cabrera
2B- Cairo

Toronto Blue Jays' Starting Lineup:

LF- Johnson
DH- Catalanotto
CF- Wells
3B- Glaus
1B- Overbay
RF- Hinske
C- Zaun
2B- Hill
SS- McDonald

Craig Wilson makes his Yankee debut tonight, and Bobby Abreu plays his second game as a Yankee, this time batting third. Johnny Damon ( best leadoff hitter in MLB), Derek Jeter ( king of working the count), and Bobby Abreu ( approaching 100 walks and the top of the pitches-per-at-bat list) start things off for New York. Man, do you think that Lily ( who sometimes has trouble throwing strikes) will even get out of the first?

Giambi's out do to a cramp he had last night, but should be back in the lineup tomorrow or Friday.

Chien-Ming Wang goes for win #13. Since Wright  only pitched five innings last night, it'd be nice to see Wang go seven or eight innings. Wang is amongst the league leaders in innings-pitched ( only 8 innings behind the overall leader, Roy Halladay)

Big game tonight. Go Yanks!

LF- Cabrera
SS- Jeter
DH- Giambi
3B- Rodriguez
C- Posada
RF- Guiel
1B- Phillips
2B- Cairo

2B- Kinsler
SS- Young
1B- Teixeira
3B- Blalock
RF- Mench
DH- DeRosa
LF- Wilkerson
C- Barajas

P- Eaton

Johnny Damon has another day off, after tweaking his back yesterday (while getting out of a car).

Only a handful of Yankees have ever faced Adam Eaton- Rodriguez (2 for 3), Jeter (1 for 4), Giambi ( 0 for 5) and Posada (0 for 2).

Eaton has good stuff, this might turn out to be a pitching duel... Play ball!

Yankees v. Blue Jays- Game 93
By mvyb, 17:36

New York Yankee's Starting Lineup:

CF- Damon
SS- Jeter
DH- Giambi
3B- Rodriguez
C- Posada
RF- Williams
1B- Phillips
LF- Cabrera
2B- Cairo

LF- Catalanotto
CF- Wells
3B- Glaus
1B- Overbay
C- Molina
DH- Zaun
2B- Hill
SS- McDonald

P- Burnett

This game will probably have a much higher score then last night's 5-4 ballgame.

Yankee starter, Jaret Wright is 1-5 lifetime against the Jays with a horrifying 9.17 ERA against them.

Burnett, meanwhile, hasn't had his best month- he is 0-2 with a 5+ ERA. Will the Blue Jays continue to hammer on Wright, or can the Yanks break out of their mini slide with a big game against Burnett? We'll see... ( My prediction: 8-4, BlueJays)

Play ball!

Yankees v. Blue Jays - Game 92
By mvyb, 18:14

New York Yankees' Starting Lineup:

CF- Damon
SS- Jeter
DH- Giambi
3B- Rodriguez
C- Posada
RF- Williams
1B- Phillips
LF- Cabrera
2B- Cairo

P- Mussina

Toronto Blue Jays' Starting Lineup:

RF- Johnson
LF- Catalanotto
CF- Wells
3B- Glaus
1B- Overbay
C- Molina
DH- Zaun
2B- Hill
SS- McDonald

P- Halladay

What a game this should be! Halladay leads the American League with 12 wins; Mussina is right behind him with 11.  Their ERAs are just about the same.

Haladay: 3.06 ERA
Mussina: 3.30 ERA

Mussina has allowed 17 homers ( to Halladay's 12) and has struck out 113 ( to Halladay's 75). Halladay keeps the ball on the ground, which should mean the Yanks will bop into a million double plays. Hopefully Mussina will have his game on tonight.

My Prediction: 6-4 (Blue Jays winning)

We'll see how it goes!
