Yankee Mania

Derek Jeter
Hey! My name is Zachary and this is my site, Yankee Mania, where I explore the games, players, and transactions of the greatest team in baseball. Hated by some but loved by others, the New York Yankees have dominated the world of sports for over a century. This year I follow their noble quest to win yet another World Series Championship. Thunder and Lightening in the Bronx!
By mvyb, 10:01

Mariners- 4, Yankees- 5   ( 10 innings)
W- Proctor ( 3-2)
L- Mateo (5-4)
Notable Yankee Players:
1B- Phillips, 2-5 ( 2B, 2R, RBI, solo HR [7] )
2B- Green, 3-3 ( 1B, 2B, 2B )
PH- Guiel, 1-1 ( RBI 1B)
LF- Cabrera, 1-5 ( walkoff, solo HR [4] )
P- Yankee Bullpen:  2H, BB, 4K, 0R, 4.1IP
Sidney Ponson's solid debut was overlooked in this awesome game,. He did pitch 6.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits ( striking out five). His only big mistake was a three-run homer to Richie Sexon in the first inning- other then that, Ponson was impressive. He gave the Yanks a chance to win the ballgame, which is all a number 5 starter is supposed to do. What he perfect? No. Was he good enough? After watching his first start for the Yanks-  yeah, I think so.
But the real pitching story here was New York's wonderful (tonight at least) bullpen. Villone came in to the game with runners on the corners, two outs, and Ichiro Suzuki batting. He struck Ichiro out looking to end the frame. Villone got into a bit of trouble in the eighth, and with runners on the corners, two outs, and Adrian Beltre batting. Kris Wilson entered the game and induced a fly out to right. Wilson then pitched a scoreless ninth inning. After the comeback and the rain delay in the bottom half of the ninth, Farnsworth and Proctor both pitched scoreless innings to end the game.
Besides Giambi's first inning RBI and Andy Phillip's second inning solo home run, the Yankee bats were silent against Joel Pineiro. The Yankees did not score again until they went into the ninth with their backs to the wall.  Andy Phillips started the inning with a double, but Cabrera struck out after an 8 pitch at-bat. Aaron Guiel pinch-hit for Nick Green, Guiel singled to right field, driving in Phillips. Posada, the potential winning run, grounded to the secondbaseman who bobbled the ball , recovered, and threw to first. Posada was clearly out, but the firstbase umpire called him safe ( finally a bad call going the Yankees way!). Nick Green went to third base, and Johnny Damon then brought him home on a sac fly. Alex Rodriguez was up, and had worked the count to 3-1....... then the rain came. The game was delayed almost two hours! ( I'd love to know what the players did in that space of time.) Anywho, when the rain let up, A-Rod struck out to end the frame, and send the ballgame into extras.
In the bottom of the eleventh, with no one on, and no one out- Melky Cabrera struck.
Yankee Player(s) of the Game: The Bullpen ( consisting of Villone, Proctor, Wilson, and even Farnsworth)
